Survey says...

Complete the survey "Politically Speaking". After the entire class has taken the survey, write a comment. Questions to consider: Do most students interact with people who disagree politically with them on a regular basis? Why or why not? Do students choose news sources that ever challenge their political beliefs? Do you think it is important for students to have their political beliefs challenged? Explain.

Here are the results...

  1. I think that most students do interact with people that do share the same political views as they do. I feel this way because people get pretty fired up about politics. So when you are hanging out with someone you are trying to get along so why would you have friends that never agreed with you. I think that some students probably do choose news sources that challenge their beliefs. I feel this way because a lot of teenagers enjoy complaining. I think that it is important to get our political beliefs challenged because a lot of people are stuck in their ways on what they believe and they dont look at both sides so if their beliefs were challenged it could change their mined for the better.

  2. Alright, did the survey didn't get an answer.. okay. Anyway I don't think students necessarily interact with people who share the same political views because politics aren't really on high schoolers minds when it comes to talking with friends. When you're older, let's say college, you may talk about it more and depending on whether or not you like to argue you'll interact with quite a few people who share the same views but maybe not all.

  3. I didn't get an answer either... But, I don't think that most students or classmates even care about their political views, let alone their friends. I guess some of them have different morals and may find some things they see on the news disturbing or interesting; but I don't think most kids even have a political view right now. Also, the only time I ever really watch or read the news is when I have State and Local homework because he makes us read the news paper. Most of the articles I read don't have anything to do with politics, however, I may disagree with some of the topics I read about.

  4. When people disagree with student they tend to back away and don’t like to interact with people who are in a disagreement. It differs on what kind of people the students are and whether they would like to try new things or sources to challenge themselves. Some would like to challenge themselves while others may not want to. Yes, I think it is important for students to have their political beliefs challenged because if they challenge themselves then more ideas will come out of their beliefs.

  5. Well, I think that if a person were to hang around someone who had entirely different political standpoints, then all they would really have is arguements. So unless someone is an argumental whore, then really I'd say they'd hang around people sharing their standpoints. However, I don't really find my peers really caring about politics, so really I have no clue whether they hangout with those with corresponding beliefs. As for choosing news services that contrast with their beliefs, perhaps they do so as to see the other side, and round out their views. Or perhaps just to complain some more about how everything the news says is wrong.
I think it's good fro people to challenge their beliefs because it allows them to see all sides of the issues.

  6. I think that it is important for people to talk with and discuss political beliefs with others who agree and disagree with them. Students should choose blogs that are challenge their political beliefs besause they can hear other peoples opinions and maybe se the topic in a new light. You might even change your beliefs about the topic. Most studentds and people are surrounded by others who disagree with thier political beliefs every day, even if they aren't discussed. Not very many people that I know talk about politics every day.

  7. I think that by-and-large, none of us even care about other peoples' political ideologies and maybe even less about politics itself. Sure we all have ideas and opinions on whatever matter blows by our way, no matter how uninformed and horrifying unintelligible they may be since as before mentioned, we're in school, we have other things to worry about than the recession and China. I would love to say that students watch news that supports their opinion, but I think that mostly that's the opinion of no opinion as in no news at all. There's also the large amount of students who ideologically belong to the Republican party yet watch the Colbert Report. I blame this on the lack of unstanding of satire and move on. I think it's important for people to challenge our beliefs. If they don't, then who will point out the deformity in our point-of-views. Who will kick us awake, snap us to our senses, even though we will indefinitely roll back to sleep in our founded roots. You can't teach a dog new tricks just as you can't teach a kid raised in tradition to learn new politics.

  8. Well, as of now i dont see very many students caring too much about politics. But, i think that people should hang around with others that feel both ways. This way there is something to discuss and sure have a little agrument over. If everyone agreed on the same things, than life would be boring.

  10. Well I’m not sure if that survey was supposed to tell me any results ….but that doesn’t matter. I believe it would be rather sad if you needed a machine or a person to tell you your political views. For me, the entire concept of categorizing individuals’ opinions is absurd. There is always that one, maybe many, subject, topic or controversy, where you surprise yourself at how you feel about it. Boxing your beliefs under specific titles always just causes trouble. For one you feel pressured into specific views based upon stereotypes of your label. “Well I’m a liberal so I kind of have to care about the environment (although there is this strange yearning inside that says I don’t give a fuck)”
As far as challenging your own views goes…. I would say there is an equal mix in the ways people go about it. An Equal mix of those who feel confident in their own beliefs and remain demure, those who have no confidence in their views and cling to those who do, and of course the self righteous assholes who want everyone to think as they do and don’t care how they do it.
Personally I enjoy hearing people’s views on almost anything. Simpatico or not. Do I seek opposing views? Not really but I don’t seek similar views either. I seek opinions and take what’s given to me. With the news I watch I wish for it to be as objective as possible. Although that’s a rare find in the 2009 news world.
